Nkopane Rapapa Student of BBA in Aviation and Management at Shoolini University
Nkopane Rapapa, who hails from Lesotho, a landlocked Kingdom encircled by South Africa, and pursuing BBA in Aviation and Management says that his life took an amazing turn when he joined Shoolini University.
Nkopane learnt about Shoolini University through social media via Facebook and Instagram and later got the green flag from his uncle, who works at the Indian embassy, to apply for admission to the University. Being an extrovert, Nkopane not only socialises with international students but also shares a great bond with his batchmates from India too.
‘It’s amazing to see how Indians wholeheartedly welcome us! I love the atmosphere here”’, he says and adds that he has never felt homesick since the day he took admission here. Nkopane loves travelling and exploring Himachal and shares his experiences from his last trek to Shivdhar. His favourite tourist destination is Goa, which he likes not only for its nightlife but also for the variety of food available, as he claims to be a big foodie.
Talking about his experiences, Nkopane says “the BBA department and International Students Office are very kind and helpful towards all of us”. His favourite is Prof Ankita from the Management department as she not only teaches professionalism but also at the same time stays friendly for helping students. Among his close friends are Pasang, Vital, Hinglung and Sarthak who hail from Nepal. When asked about his ambitions, he said that he wants to pursue an MBA from Shoolini University and then pursue a career in management.

About 150 million people, mostly women, develop Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) worldwide every year. Women in the age group of 16 to 35 years are more prone to this infection.
The infection affects the lower urinary tract, which includes the bladder and the urethra. Pain in the pelvic region, an increased need to urinate, pain during urination, and blood in the urine are all possible symptoms of a bladder infection. Back discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and fever are all possible symptoms of a kidney infection.
A team led by Dr Rajan Rolta had been conducting research on the efficacy of Bacopa monnieri, popularly known as Brahmi in India, for treating UTIs. The herb has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, either by itself or in combination with other herbs, as a memory and learning enhancer, sedative, and anti-epileptic. It grows in wet tropical environments, and India is a major producer and supplier of the herb.
Other members of the team include Dr Deeksha Salaria and Dr Jyoti Mehtafrom Shoolini University,Dr Oladoja Awofisayo from the University of Uyo, and Dr Olatomide Fadare from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria.
The team investigated the in-vitro and in-silico antibacterial activity of the medicinal plant against the bacteria that are responsible for UTIs. “Based on the results of this research, we have discovered that a decoction of Bacopa monnieri and the phytocompounds it contains have the potential to treat UTIs,” said Dr Deeksha Salaria, currently employed at the Department of Pharmacology at PGIMER Chandigarh as a Research Associate. Dr Rolta is currently serving as an ICMR-SRF in the pharmacology department at PGIMER in Chandigarh.
In this laboratory investigation, the microorganisms that are responsible for urinary tract infections were subjected to 80 per cent methanol, 96 per cent ethanol, and aqueous extracts of hyssop leaves, all of which were tested for their antibacterial properties. Week-long celebrations of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence culminated with the flag-hoisting ceremony on the campus. Former Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs Sanjiv Arora IFS (retd) was the chief guest at the flag-hoisting ceremony. He recalled the Independence movement and the supreme sacrifices made by our freedom fighters. In the present scenario, he applauded the efforts of Shoolini University in the field of research and academics.
Shoolini University Chancellor Prof PK Khosla inaugurated the event and spoke about how patriotism was crucial for the development of a nation. He emphasised lessons on national pride in classrooms. Speaking on the occasion, Pro Chancellor Vishal Anand dedicated the 75th-anniversary celebrations to the daughters who went through the pain of Partition. “We must commemorate them and their sacrifices,” he added.

Also, poster, slogan-making, speech and poetry competitions were organised by NSS where participants submitted their entries online.
Shoolinians for You (SFY) volunteers organised a visit to the government school near Majhol, Solan. They decorated the stage where students showcased their creative talents. Gifts were distributed among the students as a token of love by Dean Students Welfare and Chief Learning Officer Dr Ashoo Khosla.
August 12 started with a ‘Harghar Tiranga’ March in Solan town. More than 100 volunteers from the university (NSS, NCC, SFY) went through the town, carrying placards saying ‘Vande Matram’, ‘Shoolini ka yahi naara hai, haar ghar Tiranga fehrana hai’. The rally started at the Children’s Park, Solan and culminated at the Old Bus Stand.
On August 13, a visit to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Shimla, in collaboration with YouWeCan, was organised where volunteers met Cancer patients to motivate them in their fight against the life-threatening disease. Volunteers were accompanied by Sarabjeet Singh aka “Vella Bobby” who inspired students to work for a good cause and offered ‘langar’ to everyone.
A Cycling March was organised on August 14 to raise awareness about the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. The march took place from SILB to the Shoolini University campus. The volunteers handed over the National Flag to university Chancellor Prof PK Khosla.
Dr Virender Rihani is the Dean of Engineering and Adviser at Shoolini University. We spoke to him about the new streams in Engineering and career opportunities for students. Excerpts from the interview:
Tell us about your professional journey and how you got associated with Shoolini University?
I pursued my BTech in Electronics from Delhi College of Engineering in 1970. In 1977, while I was doing my MTech at the same university, I was hired by Punjab Engineering College through UPSC. Teaching a large class of students was difficult at first. I was forced to pick up subjects that weren’t in my curriculum, which was a major challenge. I left my position as Department Head at Punjab Engineering College in 2012 and joined a private university as Vice Chancellor and Dean of Engineering School till 2018. After that, I decided to retire in 2018. But Ashish Khosla, a former student, persuaded me to leave my retirement and work at Shoolini University. That’s how I arrived here.
What is unique about the engineering program at Shoolini University?

What are the various fields covered by the School of Engineering at the university?
We offer programs in Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Communications, and Mechanical engineering. Recently, we have also added Artificial Intelligence in Engineering which is becoming quite popular and has great potential.
How has Engineering contributed to Shoolini’s growth?
When Shoolini University first began the related programs, there were a lot of applicants for admission in engineering, particularly in mechanical engineering. The market demand has changed over time, but the university is still turning out a large number of engineering graduates who are having successful careers.
What are the job prospects after completing studies in Engineering in various fields?
Different types of prospects exist. Some students aspire to work in the government, while others would rather work in the private sector. Those who desire to launch their firms are another group. For those who attend lectures consistently and work hard, there are many employment opportunities. For instance, starting salaries for computer science students range from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh, while salaries for mechanical engineering students may be in the range of Rs 14 lakh to Rs 15 lakh, and so on.
How is the university guiding students to make up their minds about different fields of Engineering?
Over time, we have found that the courses that are provided by most universities are not viable because of limitations in demand. So, we have decided to modify our curriculum, which is in line with the requirements of the industry. AI impacts everything, including law and medicine, as well as every aspect of human life. We have accordingly modified our engineering programs as per the new requirements. We are offering a Civil Engineering program with a specialisation in AI. Similarly, we are looking forward to introducing more such programs.
What should a student expect before joining any engineering course?
That is a question which has been asked from me, not just by the students of Shoolini but many other places including the IITs. In my opinion, only those with an engineering mindset and interest should enter the field. Making a choice based on peer pressure without understanding your strengths or goals will not help you succeed. Students should realise their interests and goals first. When it comes to engineering, I want students to be interested in how things are happening in the desired sector. This would enable them to make wiser decisions in life.
What is ageing? It is the result of a wide variety of molecular and cellular damage accumulating over the years. This causes a steady decline in physical and mental function, an increase in the risk of disease, and eventually mortality. These changes are neither linear nor consistent, and their association with a person’s age in years is only tenuous. Diversity in senior age is not coincidental. In addition to biological changes, ageing is frequently connected with other life transitions, such as retirement, moving to more suitable housing, and the loss of friends and companions.
In his research, Dr Rohit Sharma of Shoolini University has focused on figuring out what causes ageing and finding nutritional elements that can slow or lessen the adverse effects of ageing. Philosophers and scientists alike have never been able to figure out why and how organisms age. Several theories about ageing have been put forward so far, but none of them seems to take into account the different parts of ageing. Even though there is no agreement on whether or not ageing itself is a disease, it is important to note that there is enough evidence to suggest that several long-term diseases in humans, such as cancer and diabetes, are strongly linked to age, suggesting a direct link between diseases and ageing.
However, how nutrition affects ageing within the purview of the emerging cellular senescence-based understanding of ageing is yet unclear and least explored. Considering this, Dr Sharma’s lab focuses on the identification of Himalayan medicinal plants for their anti-ageing potential and aims at developing novel functional foods with the ability to extend organismal healthspan and lifespan.
The research team has found that the catechin EGCG in green tea is an important nutrient that can help with many aspects of ageing and senescence. Using a unique model of a long-term experiment with mice, Dr Sharma’s team showed that long-term consumption of tea catechin can significantly prevent age-related damage to cells and molecules, while also improving several age-related cell dysfunctions in the animals, which in turn increased their healthspan. This was the first large-scale study to look at how tea affects ageing and health. It showed that drinking tea is good for ageing and health. The group also tested how well drinking tea worked in an actual model of colonic inflammatory disease. They found that drinking tea does protect animals from damage and cancer caused by inflammation.
The research team is now trying to figure out how cellular senescence affects known factors that affect ageing, such as immunity and the microbiota in the gut. Also, different medicinal plants from the Himalayas are being studied for their anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory properties. The idea behind the whole research is to help the elderly improve their immune systems and reduce inflammation.
