  • Diet and Lifestyle Changes Urgent as Cancer Cases Spike

    “WHAT’S on your plate today? A nourishing meal or a silent invitation to cancer?” Indians need to address this question swiftly, as our changing dietary habits have put us on a precarious path to becoming the world’s cancer capital. While diabetes has already cast a pall over our country’s health, the silent epidemic of cancer is gaining traction, fueled by a toxic combination of ultra-processed foods, frozen dinners, a sedentary lifestyle, and freewheeling alcohol consumption.  

    Silent Killers in Your Freezer 

    In recent years, with everyone so busy with their jobs, cooking has taken a backseat. The quickest way to eat is to use packaged or frozen foods and two-minute cooking methods. Though this time-saving habit makes life easy, it may unknowingly reduce life expectancy and raise mortality rates. Ultra-processed foods — packaged with artificial flavours, preservatives, and chemicals — dominate shop aisles and our everyday meals. Frozen foods, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, are major offenders. These items are high in transfats, salt, and processed sugars, all known to cause inflammation and alter cellular function.  

    The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified processed meats such as sausages and frozen nuggets as Group 1 carcinogens, which are directly connected to colorectal cancer and a variety of malignancies. A 2024 report from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and American Cancer Society revealed a staggering 12 per cent annual increase in cancer cases across the country.  

    Alcohol: The Party Poison 

    Alcohol consumption in India has spiked dramatically, particularly among the younger population. What begins as a “fun” party necessity frequently becomes a health hazard. According to studies published in ‘Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention’, alcohol is directly connected to six types of cancer: breast, liver, colorectal, esophageal, laryngeal, and oral. A notable study in 2023 highlighted alcohol’s role in increasing cancer risks, emphasising its impact on cellular DNA repair mechanisms. According to WHO data from 2023, alcohol accounts for more than 7 per cent of cancer deaths worldwide. Nevertheless, it is consumed recklessly, becoming a standard feature at both celebrations and as a stress relief. This alarming trend is particularly troubling in urban India, where binge drinking is on the rise. 

    Sedentary Lifestyle & Nutrition Deficit 

    With almost 1.5 million new cancer cases recorded each year, India is on a grim trajectory. A Lancet study from 2024 forecasts that India’s cancer burden will double by 2040 if there is no change in lifestyle and nutritional habits. For many Indians, physical activity has become a luxury rather than a need. Sedentary jobs, urban congestion, and the appeal of screen-based entertainment have reduced daily exercise to an afterthought.  

    A 2024 ICMR survey found that less than 25 per cent of Indians get the required 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily, resulting in a lethal cycle. Even charred or overcooked foods, such as those found in barbecues and ‘tandoors’, contain carcinogenic chemicals known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Amid this grim reality, the power of diet cannot be overstated. For cancer patients, a nutrient-rich diet tailored to their treatment plan is as vital as chemotherapy. Unfortunately, nutrition remains the most ignored part of cancer treatment. It’s time to make health a non-negotiable priority.  

    A Solution-Centric Approach 

    The dangers outlined above demand urgent action. According to the ICMR’s updated NIN nutrition pyramid (2024) and the Indian Dietetic Association (IDA), alongside top dietitians in India, the following lifestyle changes are essential: 

    Dietary Recommendations

    • Increase Intake of Fresh Produce: Regularly include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. 
    • Prefer Home-Cooked Meals: Choose homemade meals over frozen or prepackaged options. For those short on time, opt for quick, healthy choices like salads, fermented foods (eg: idli, uttapam), and avoid refined products. 
    • Workplace Dining: Choose traditional ‘thali’ meals in food courts and canteens instead of fast food options like wraps, burgers, and instant noodles. 
    • Moderate Alcohol and Eliminate Tobacco: Limit alcohol, which is a less recognised but significant cancer risk. Completely avoid tobacco and smoking. 

    Hydration and Nutrients

    • Stay Hydrated: Consume 3.5 to 4 litres of water daily to support cellular function and detoxification. 
    • Protein and Healthy Fats: Include high biological value proteins such as eggs, fish, and chicken, or vegetarian options like rice and dal or ‘chapati’ with curd. Opt for healthy fats rich in MUFA and PUFA, such as groundnut oil, olive oil, walnut oil, and flaxseed oil. 

    Physical Activity Guidelines

    • Regular Exercise: Adhere to the WHO’s recommendation of at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, along with strength training sessions twice a week. 

    Combating cancer begins with adjusting our food and lifestyle choices. The critical question remains: are we prepared to take up this fight?

  • PRAGATI Programme Transforms Rural Business Dreams

    The PRAGATI Rural Women Entrepreneurs Development Programme at Shoolini University continues to make significant strides, with participants attending their second monthly campus visit after the programme’s launch on January 28.  

    The initiative, spearheaded by Payal Jindal Khanna, Deputy Head of the Centre for Leadership Coaching, and backed by Vice Chancellor Prof Atul Khosla, is dedicated to equipping rural women with essential business skills and coaching support. 

    During the visit, the MS Swaminathan School of Agriculture, under the guidance of Dean Prof Somesh Sharma and Assistant Professor Devanshi Pandit, provided in-depth training on mushroom cultivation, offering participants insights into sustainable agricultural practices. Simultaneously, the School of Bioengineering and Food Technology, led by Dean Prof Dinesh Kumar, introduced the women to food processing techniques. Staff member Narendra conducted a workshop on making pickles, juices, and purées, empowering ‘sakhis’ with knowledge in value-added food production. 

    Women interested in candle-making also attended an interactive session with Kritika Sharma, a faculty member and entrepreneur. She shared her expertise in the craft, helping the ‘sakhis’ broaden their business opportunities. 

    A special highlight of the day was an interaction with UPES Dehradun Chancellor Dr Sunil Rai. Prof Atul Khosla introduced Dr Rai to the participants, who then encouraged the women and pledged his support for the PRAGATI programme initiative. Dr Rai emphasised, “Success is the only option for this project.” Echoing this sentiment, Shoolini University Chancellor Prof PK Khosla assured the participants that Shoolini University would extend its support through its business incubator programmes to help ‘sakhis’ transition into successful entrepreneurs. 

    Payal Khanna and two student mentors visited Chhamrog village to meet a ‘sakhi’ who could not attend the session, ensuring that no participant missed out on learning opportunities. 

    By the end of the day, the ‘sakhis’ expressed increased enthusiasm and confidence in tackling entrepreneurial challenges, further solidifying PRAGATI’s mission of helping rural women entrepreneurs establish their business identities.

Here’s why: 

    Game-Changing Trends in VR Therapy: 

    • Full-Body Immersion: Motion-tracking suits allow patients to move naturally, making physical therapy feel like a game.

    Talking about how VR therapy is revolutionising mental health care, Stanford School of Medicine neuropsychiatrist Dr Kim Bullock said VR therapy uses a head-mounted display (HMD) that stimulates several senses to produce a completely immersive experience. Social (interacting with others), spatial (feeling within a virtual place), and self-presentation (embodiment in an avatar) are three ways that this technology improves presence, all of which affect emotions and cognition. 

    She highlighted the three main classifications of virtual reality: 

    •  The experience of traditional VR is entirely digital. 
    • Digital features are superimposed on the physical world using augmented reality (AR). 
    • Embodied VR is helpful for body image treatment because it allows users to adopt a virtual persona. 

    According to Dr Kim Bullock, exposure therapy is a popular use of virtual reality treatment that helps patients with PTSD, social anxiety, and phobias by progressively facing concerns in a safe, immersive setting. Another innovation in pain management is the use of virtual reality diversions to lessen the misery of burn victims or chronic pain patients. VR also helps older patients with cognitive stimulation. 

    Two decades of research have shown that VR therapy is as successful as CBT, frequently with lower dropout rates. By modifying self-perception, embodied virtual reality holds the potential for treating psychosomatic illnesses, phantom limb pain, and body image issues, she added.  

    However, despite its potential, VR therapy has drawbacks. Setting clinical standards is challenging due to the rapid advancement of VR technology, and more research is necessary to address issues including cybersickness, visual fatigue, and cognitive effects. Additionally, there is no standardised training for therapists, despite ongoing efforts. 

    After all, says Dr Bullock, virtual reality is a tool, not a substitute for conventional therapy. More research could transform mental health care by improving the efficacy, accessibility, and immersion of the treatment.  

    With more than 15 years of experience in neuropsychiatry and cognitive behavioural therapy, she first researched psychosomatic disorders before incorporating virtual reality therapy into her work five years ago.

    Vidiksha, a third-year B Tech Biotechnology student at Shoolini University, received the Best Poster Presentation Award at the prestigious ‘Viksit Bharat 2047: Reaching the Unreached Through Chemical and Biological Sciences’ (VBCB-2025) conference. The event was held at SRM University’s Delhi-NCR Campus in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, from February 18-20.  

    Organised in collaboration with the Royal Society of Chemistry, the VBCB-2025 conference was designed to propel India towards its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
