  • Shoolini Leads in Self-Sustainability & Energy-Efficiency

The earth is facing numerous crises, including those in the environment, food, and energy. Add to this the exploitation of our natural resources, and the result? Severe problems like decreased air quality and global climate change. Take Europe’s raging forest fires. They are a result of rising temperatures and persistent drought. Moreover, leaders across the continent are scrambling to face the challenges arising from the impending gas shortage forecast this winter.

There is simply no escape! Sustainability is a critical and universal concern. As the climate crisis worsens, we can no longer put it off. However, becoming sustainable doesn’t happen overnight. It takes several baby steps, sometimes challenging and some into the unknown, to take sustainability to the next level and beyond.

India is committed to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It believes the education system has a significant role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

Acknowledging the growing need and concerns, University Grants Commission (UGC) 2020 proposed a sustainable campus framework to outline the principles for achieving a green and sustainable campus environment for Indian Higher Education Institutions. It will help make institutions more environment-friendly and educate the youth on the importance of ecological balance and long-term growth.

In this light, Shoolini University has taken several steps to combat climate change, including using renewable energy sources, decreasing reliance on fossil fuels for transportation, increasing participation in communal cooking, and cultivating drought-resistant plant varieties in agriculture. The university believes in the dire need for higher education institutions (HEIs) to address sustainability concerns. This can be done by creating awareness, imparting education, framing policies, and, most importantly, cutting-edge research.

Please keep reading if you have ever wondered about sustainable development and why it’s essential for the survival of all species on earth.

    What is Sustainable Development?

The most widely accepted definition of sustainable development is, “To meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

In other words, sustainable development is the way for a country to develop economically without compromising the quality of the environment for future generations.

The three main goals of sustainable development are:

    Economic growth

Economic growth means building a robust and competitive economy. This can be done by ensuring that sufficient and the correct type of land is available in the right places and at the right time to support growth and innovation. Later, this will identify and coordinate development requirements.

    Environmental protection

Environmental protection helps to protect and enhance both our natural and built environments. It helps improve biodiversity, use natural resources wisely, reduce waste and pollution, adapt to climate change, and move towards a low-carbon economy on a global scale.

    Social inclusion

Social inclusion supports strong, vibrant, and healthy communities by ensuring enough housing to meet the needs of both the current and future generations. Also, it needs to be confirmed that there are high-quality developments with local services that reflect the community’s needs and support its health, social, and cultural well-being.

    Importance of Self-Sustainability

Another term for environmentally sustainable economic growth is sustainable development. The goal is to achieve harmony between environmental, economic, and socio-political sustainability. Sustainable development always encourages us to conserve and enhance our resources by gradually altering how we develop and use technology. Every country must meet its basic needs for employment, food, energy, water, and sanitation. Everyone has the right to live in a healthy, safe, and clean environment. This is easily accomplished by lowering pollution, poverty, and unemployment.

    Why is sustainable development significant?

    • Making judicious use of resources and striving to maintain ecological balance.
    • Emphasising preservation of the environment and halting its deterioration.
    • Prevent overutilisation of resources.

    Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Campus

Shoolini University has been ranked No.2 in the world in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Affordable and Clean Energy and 6th in the Water Usage and Care category by Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2022.

The university has bagged the award for one of India’s most inspiring, green, and cleanest campuses. With exotic and indigenous plant species dotting this unique learning space and infrastructure integrated with nature, the university has become a popular spot for sustainable development.

    Sustainability through on-campus initiatives

    • Waste Management: The University is taking steps to dispose of and decompose garbage waste generated on the campus instead of burning it. It also promotes maximum reuse-recycle to minimise the use of disposable articles on campus.
    • Energy Policy: Under the energy policy, all buildings are renovated, designed, and constructed as per energy-efficient solar passive and environment-friendly technologies. Shoolini University has installed a 400 kWp rooftop photovoltaic power plant on the campus to meet its energy requirements partially. It produces two times more electricity than it requires by installing solar power plants.
    • Plantations: The campus is home to a variety of plants that maintain ecological greenery. Students plant trees on campus and even geo-tag them for visitors.
    • Cleanliness Drives: Several cleanliness drives are held on the campus from time to time, involving NSS volunteers, faculty members, and students.

    • Water Conservation: A Sewage Treatment Plant and an Effluent Treatment Plant are installed on the campus to treat sewage water and wastewater from hostels and research laboratories, respectively. Recycled sewage water is used for gardening, rainwater harvesting, and drip irrigation to conserve water and nutrients.
    • Passive Solar Housing Policy: The university has developed a Yogananda Ville with several solar huts on the campus using sustainable building materials like wood, bamboo, slate, stone, mud, stabilised mud blocks, etc.
    • Installation of eco-friendly bins: Different eco-friendly bamboo-based dustbins (blue for non-biodegradable and green for bio-degradable) are installed across the campus in various locations to separate wet and dry garbage. This also generates income for local bamboo basket artisans.
    • Electric vehicles/Carts: Use of non-polluting electric vehicles for in-campus transportation and reducing carbon emissions.
    • Solar thermal cooking system: The university has installed a solar thermal cooking system that provides for cooking food for hostel students.
    • Solar streetlights and LED lights: Solar streetlights are installed throughout the campus to reduce dependence on conventional electricity and to utilise clean energy sources. Also, 90% of the university lights have been replaced with energy-efficient LED lights.
    • e-Studios: Our cutting-edge e-studios are revolutionising online education. These wonderfully crafted eco-friendly log huts provide a one-of-a-kind educational experience, complete with state-of-the-art technology such as high-speed Internet, Ethernet, whiteboards, and lightboards for streamlined online lectures.

  • Life Skills That Help Students Flourish

Life Skills education is a comprehensive term and is used to describe a situation or scenario where an individual acquires basic skills through learning and knowledge. According to World Health Organization (WHO), life skills are “A group of psychosocial competencies and interpersonal skills that help people make informed decisions, solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, empathise with others, and cope with and manage their lives in a healthy and productive manner. Life skills may be directed toward personal actions or actions toward others, as well as toward actions to change the surrounding environment to make it conducive to health.”

    What is Life Skills Education?

The education landscape has transformed enormously, bringing into its ambit life skills, which have now become an intrinsic part of education. Through Life Skills Education, a person can keep abreast of the fast-paced world and overcome any kind of challenge, meeting life’s demands and solving problems head on. Students live a positive and wholesome life by learning to interpret, organise and conduct activities related to their well-being in a systematic and coordinated way.

    Life skills for students

There are some foundational life skills for students that stand them not only through their student life but also during their career. These life skills can be categorised as:

    Self-Management

When students learn to manage themselves, they become team players, at work and in life. This is possible through self-management, which is a vital component of life skill development. With the development of these skills, students are able to resist impulsive behaviour and do what they truly believe in.

    Being present

Being on time, attending classes and maintaining a presence during social meetings form a part of life skills activities. In today’s time, young adults are connected but are also socially isolated. Maintaining physical, mental and social presence is vital and life skill development focuses in this direction as well.

    Maintaining integrity

Doing the right thing, knowing the right thing and selecting the best action even when no one is around is another life skill for students that they need to follow religiously.

    Relational Ability

The mood of a person gets boosted when they are in a strong relationship. It is therefore important for young students to know how to make friends and maintain healthy relationships. Being a part of one-to-one relationships, meetings, public speaking, and small groups are some key indicators that fulfill this vital obligation.

    Keeping and maintaining social commitments

To maintain healthy relations with others, it is important to be available whenever the situation demands. Maintaining social commitment is also part of life skills education that today’s youngsters need to possess. Youngsters get the opportunity to interact and be a part of shared interest groups.

    Communication

No meaningful relationship can develop without effective communication. These days, most relations are in the virtual mode and our efforts should be directed in a way that students are able to communicate face to face. For this, discussions, seminars and conversations can be an effective medium.

    Toughness

Every student has to go through tough times and some adversity at some point. It is during such times that they need to be tough and resilient and face the emerging scenario with strength. These qualities form a vital part of life skill development.

    Hopefulness

A student should always maintain hope and mentors should work in this direction. When hope is stimulated positivity comes in a natural course and makes a person vibrant and lively.

    Solution-oriented approach

A solution-oriented approach should always be advocated. When a person is inclined towards looking for a solution, any problem, be it small or big, goes away in course of time. A positive mindset always works wonders.

These basic skills help students find new ways to solve problems and recognise the impact of their actions. This enables them to take responsibility. Moreover, life skills education that students get through opportunities like VEmpower Coaching builds their confidence in spoken skills as well as group collaboration and cooperation.

The importance of life skills also lies in the fact that it makes students analyse options, make decisions and understand the implications of these decisions in choices that they make in the classroom and beyond. A greater sense of self-awareness and appreciation for others become evident when life skills activities are carried out sincerely.

Any individual is able to reflect, identify and achieve personal and professional goals in a better manner as they are able to identify their weakness and work on the skill set which is the need of the hour once they realise the true potential of life skill education.

Evident output of life skill education

As students progress during any such quality program, their cognitive skills also develop and this reflects in the form of a better ability to focus and clarity of concepts.

Problem analysis and strategic thinking abilities also develop and students are able to visualise a better perspective for their career goals. Effective time management, improved communication skills and a coordinated work-life balance are some other key skills that get honed and polished.

Therefore, it can be concluded that life skill education focuses on the development of key skills like critical thinking, problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Life Skill-based education is nationally and internationally recognised as a methodology to address a range of issues related to youth development and it is high time that Life Skill Education is on our priority list.

  • Researchers Cook up ‘9-Millet Porridge Mix’ for Good Health

    Saket Saurabh

The staple food of our ancestors, millets have recently emerged as the new superfood! Interestingly, also used as cattle feed, millets were once considered the last option for the very poor who could not afford wheat or rice.

Millets are small, whole grains belonging to the Poaceae family, and are usually grown in semi-arid regions. They contain a considerable amount of fibre, protein, calcium and antioxidants. They are gluten-free and have a low glycemic index. This yields better nutrition when consumed compared to rice and wheat.

Inspired by the nutrients in millets, a team of Shoolini food tech researchers, Dr Pankaj Kumar Chauhan, Professor, School of Bioengineering and Food Technology and Mahima Shree NM (MSc Food Technology) have created a unique porridge with ingredients from nine kinds of millets.

The development of the ‘9-Millet Porridge Mix’ is a good substitute for the Indian staple diet and the porridge can be consumed by diabetics and people who suffer from gluten intolerance.

This porridge mix targets a group of people who want to control diabetes, who are looking for healthy alternatives and also who want to transition towards healthy eating. This product is a very healthy alternative to rice and wheat and is rich in dietary fibre as well. This food product is designed so that it is quick to make, high in minerals like magnesium, phosphorus and calcium, low in fats, zero cholesterol and gluten-free. Millets are still not popular among people but these are proven to have greater nutrition than rice, wheat, corn and other cereals.

The 9 types of millets include Finger Millet, Pearl Millet, Proso Millet, Barnyard Millet, Foxtail Millet, Little Millet, Browntop Millet and Jowar. It also contains almonds, cinnamon, cardamom and Vitamin E. The Kodo millet used in the formula helps to regulate blood glucose levels and finger millets is a rich source of calcium. While a mix of a couple of millers is available in the market, there is no other product with nine varieties of millets.

The incorporation of millets like Browntop Millet and Pearl Millet in foods needs to increase. A healthy diet and lifestyle are the key to solving issues like malnutrition, lifestyle diseases and others, according to Dr Chauhan.

Dr Pankaj Kumar Chauhan said the mix they had created did not contain any artificial flavours, colours or preservatives and was free from any kind of chemicals. “This product can be cooked to yield a wholesome meal in the form of a porridge which takes less than 5 minutes to cook. It consists of a considerable number of polyphenols and being low in glycaemic index, it helps to regulate blood sugar levels. Consuming this product will improve overall health,” he added.
