In an effort to challenge societal norms surrounding women’s health, Shoolini University, in collaboration with the women’s empowerment organisation ‘Lajja’, recently hosted a groundbreaking workshop titled ‘Her Story, Her Health: Tackling Menstrual Wellness, UTIs, and Mental Wellbeing Together’.

The workshop brought together a panel of distinguished experts from various fields. Disha Sareen, co-founder of Lajja and founder of Hyper Lab (AI), discussed the empowering role of technology and education for women. Aastha Sharma, managing director at Lajja and a seasoned Australian registered nurse, shared her insights on integrating physical and mental health in diverse cultural contexts. Dr Piyush Juneja, an esteemed Ayurvedic medicine practitioner with 17 years of experience, provided valuable knowledge on traditional health practices focusing on female health disorders. Shreya Batra, an Australian registered psychologist, highlighted the importance of mental wellbeing, especially for women post-childbirth.

The event served as a platform for open dialogue, shared experiences, and collective healing, offering personalised consultations for attendees seeking guidance towards holistic wellbeing. The panellists addressed critical issues such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and the importance of timely intervention. The Cinedicate Club, in collaboration with the School of Media and Communications at Shoolini University, hosted the screening of the film ‘Rabb Di Awaaz’,  India’s first multi-inclusive film, on Friday.  

‘Rabb Di Awaaz’ resonates deeply with its portrayal of the struggles faced by both the specially-abled and the youth, addressing pertinent issues such as depression, loneliness, and mental health in today’s fragmented world. 

The entire star cast, besides the producer Ojaswwee Sharma, were present at the film screening. These included Bhasker Pandey, Abhinav Sharma, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Sandeep Kumar, Mohit Verma, Sarvpriya Nirmohi, Shridhar Gupta, Rita Dutt and Varun Narang. 

Ojaswwee Sharma, a National Award-winning film director, led the groundbreaking project, further solidifying his reputation as a visionary filmmaker dedicated to societal change. 

Shiv Kumar Sharma, the movie’s lead actor, emphasised the importance of inner transformation, urging society to recognise and utilise its abilities for the betterment of all. 

The film Director, Ojaswwee Sharma, talked about the film’s five-year journey, highlighting the groundbreaking decision to cast visually impaired individuals in key roles, thereby authentically representing the community on screen. 

The screening was followed by a panel discussion, where the cast members shared how they prepared for the role. 

Shoolini University Chancellor Prof PK Khosla said he believed in the power of cinema to inspire change, and this film exemplified that belief. Therefore, the  Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Shoolini Vice Chancellor Prof Atul Khosla, and Vice Chancellor and President Newcastle University Prof Chris Day, is a significant step towards direct engagement and cooperation between the two institutions.

Gaurav Sharma, who graduated with a B Tech Biotechnology with Summit Research Program (SRP) in 2021, is ready to showcase his invention, the ‘Water Conservation & Utilisation System,’ at the Gujarat Technology Transfer Summit 2024 on April 19th. This invention could significantly affect how water is managed in the Himalayan agricultural areas. It provides a better way to save water and deliver it to farmers when needed. 

The Innovation  

The ‘Water Conservation & Utilisation System’ introduces a system for efficiently conserving and utilising rainwater, applicable in agricultural settings and for residential rainwater harvesting. Notably, its assembly process is straightforward, consisting of three steps: head, neck, and bottom, ensuring user-friendly installation. 

One of its key strengths lies in its versatility, as it can be deployed across various terrains, ranging from small to large agricultural fields, as well as hilly and flat landscapes.  

The system comprises essential components such as a conical collector, designed to gather rainwater and an efficient filtration system for water purification. This collected water is then stored in a water conservation tank linked to another tank.  

Two transportation vessels facilitate the movement of water, with one transferring water from the collector to the conservation tank and the other from the conservation tank to the supplementary reservoir.  

Additional features include a siphoning port for managing excess water, a valve mechanism for regulating water flow into the conservation tank, and adjustment ports for fine-tuning filtration processes.  

The system also includes channels for controlled irrigation by strategically releasing stored water. A supporting connector assembly ensures stability and structural integrity. 

Furthermore, a dedicated pumping system facilitates efficient water distribution, catering to various irrigation methods, including drip and sprinkle systems.  

The Backdrop 

This innovation began to take shape in his high school days. Seeing the struggles of farmers in his hometown of Prasala (Mandi, Himachal Pradesh) with insufficient water conservation in terraced fields sparked his desire to find a solution. Yet, as a student, he required additional resources to bring his ideas to life. 

Fast forward to his undergraduate studies at Shoolini University in 2021. He says, “Under the expert mentorship of my professor, Saurabh Kulshrestha, I was able to turn my idea into a practical design. The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell at Shoolini University played a crucial role in obtaining utility status for the invention. After two years of hard work, our efforts culminated in a publication that set the stage for showcasing the invention at the Technology Transfer Summit 2024, hosted by Gujarat Technological University (GTU) and the Government of India.” 

Gaurav further states, “This journey would not have been possible without the nurturing environment at Shoolini University. I am thankful for the chance to present this innovation and contribute towards a more sustainable agricultural future in the Himalayas.” 

Message for Aspiring Innovators

Vanshika Abbhi, a proud alumna of Shoolini University and part of the first batch of B Tech Biotech Summit Research Program (SRP), has been accepted into a PhD program at Nagoya University in Japan. Originally from Faridabad, Haryana, Vanshika secured the MEXT scholarship for her master’s studies and then earned an extension as a MEXT fellow to continue her PhD in Japan.

With a passion for agriculture and research, Vanshika arrived at Shoolini University seeking a platform to explore her interests. Drawn to its research-focused approach, she found her calling through the exclusive SRP. Under the mentorship of Dean Research Prof Saurabh Kulshreshtha, Vanshika explored the intriguing world of mycoviruses, also known as fungal viruses. This topic ignited her curiosity, sparking a desire to dive deeper into its complexities.

Mycoviruses are known for lessening the harmful effects of fungi that damage crops. They offer an eco-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides, particularly fungicides commonly used in agriculture.

It was her mother, a botanist, who nurtured Vanshika’s interest in agriculture. She grew up learning about plants and agriculture from her. As time passed, her curiosity led her to explore biotechnology and the world of research. Being an SRP student at Shoolini, she was admitted to the Molecular Plant Microbe Interaction (MPMI) laboratory. There, she began studying mycoviruses, gaining hands-on experience and a deep understanding of these fungal viruses.

Her interest in mycoviruses led her to Japan. Recognising the expertise of Prof Sotaro Chiba at Nagoya University in this field, she wanted to continue her studies under his guidance. Before applying for the prestigious MEXT scholarship, Vanshika took the initiative to connect with Prof Chiba. Impressed by the scholar’s passion and dedication, Prof Chiba agreed to accept her as a master’s student on the condition that she secured the MEXT fellowship.

The MEXT scholarship process spans a year and involves four rigorous rounds, including document submission, research proposals, interviews, and approval from chosen professors. With over 1000 applicants annually, only a handful progress to the final round. Vanshika emphasises the importance of early contact with professors. Securing Prof Chiba’s acceptance early on was crucial for her success. She highlights the risk of losing the opportunity if a chosen professor denies acceptance in the final round.

Her research topic during her master’s was ‘Biological Mechanism of Mycoviruses in Reducing the Pathogenicity of Fusarium boothii’. She focused on this topic because it aligned with promoting sustainable agriculture. Vanshika pointed out, “Nowadays, our plates are full of harmful chemical pesticides. By studying mycoviruses, I want to contribute to food security in a sustainable manner.”

After excelling in her master’s program, Vanshika applied for a PhD extension through the MEXT program. She found the application process straightforward. The Shoolini star presented her research proposal to the university commission and then cleared the interview with the committee and embassy members. As a result, she successfully secured the MEXT extension and was accepted for a PhD program.

Agriculture has become more advanced with the integration of AI. I am eager to gain practical experience by interning in an agriculture company while pursuing my PhD,” she added.

The Centre of Psychology and Behavioural Sciences at Shoolini University, in collaboration with Speaking Cube, an online mental health consulting foundation, and the University of Venda, South Africa, hosted the 4th Virtual International Conference on ‘Mindful Trauma Management and Happy Relationships’.

The conference marked a significant milestone in mental health and relationship dynamics, bringing together a wealth of expertise and insights from around the world.

The chief guest at the Conference, Uttarakhand State Minister Madhu Bhatt, shared her insights on woman empowerment and the importance of mental health in leading fulfilling lives.

Distinguished speakers, including psychologist and play therapist Gurmeet Sharda, and founder director of Speaking Cube Deepika Chamoli Shahi, provided guidance and inspiration throughout the event.

Notable figures such as Padma Bhushan Anil Prakash Joshi and Shoolini University Chancellor Prof Prem Kumar Khosla enriched the discourse with their wisdom and experience.
