After every three lectures, we also implement an additional instructional session, the tutorial class. We have a committee similar to a school academic committee that regularly updates our curriculum. These proposed syllabi are then sent to industry experts for feedback. With their current knowledge, these experts review and suggest relevant subjects and topics to include.
The revised proposals are then presented to the board of studies, which consists of additional experts who provide further suggestions. We update our curriculum using all the gathered data and recommendations to ensure students remain informed about the latest industry advancements.

Q: Could you tell us about yourself and your journey at Shoolini University?
A: I’m from Una, Himachal Pradesh. As the Head of the Chitrakoot School of Liberal Arts at Shoolini University, Associate Professor Purnima Bali is at the heart of the department. She brings over 16 years of rich teaching and research experience to her role. An award-winning educator and prolific researcher, Associate Prof Bali has contributed extensively to English literature, cultural studies, feminism, and world literature through numerous international publications.
Recognised with prestigious accolades like the ‘Young Faculty Award 2016’ and ‘Bright Educator Awards’ in 2017 and 2018, Associate Professor Bali also holds editorial positions in several esteemed journals and serves on advisory committees for national and international conferences. With a PhD in English Literature from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, she continues to inspire students and colleagues.
In this interview with Shoolini IMPACT, the CSLA Head shares her inspiring journey, her vision for the Liberal Arts program at Shoolini University, and her ongoing projects to enrich the academic landscape.
1. What fuels your passion for teaching, and what attracted you to Shoolini University?
“All through my childhood and youth, I missed having a good teacher and mentor. This is why I always wanted to become a teacher and make a difference in the lives of young people. One thing that attracted me to Shoolini University was the culture, the environment, and the beauty of the place.
The students and faculty members come from diverse nationalities, especially within the Liberal Arts department, which includes faculty from Syria, Taiwan, China, Ethiopia, Iran, and all around India. This diversity is the real beauty of the university, as it allows us to learn, unlearn, and relearn from those around us.
I believe Shoolini University has a positive aura. Every morning, I look forward to coming to campus. There’s never a day when I don’t feel like coming to the university and meeting everyone. I have never experienced this, even though I have been a part of many schools and universities across the country.
2. How did you make Shoolini one of the best Liberal Arts universities in India?
At the Chitrakoot School of Liberal Arts, we follow an interdisciplinary approach. Although programs like BA English (Honours) focus on English literature, our students benefit from courses in History, Political Science, Sociology, foreign languages, and Hindi. This interdisciplinary method distinguishes Liberal Arts from core programs. Our students also gain exposure to international and renowned speakers through various initiatives during the program.
We go beyond academics at the Chitrakoot School of Liberal Arts by conducting various activities to enhance student exposure. Our annual Literature Festival, held every March or April, is a highlight, featuring lectures from diverse speakers, including film producers, singers, poets, chefs, athletes, actors, and bands.
We have recently received approval from the academic council to start the Center of Excellence for Language Learning (CELL), offering several programs:
ELP (English Learning Program): This three-month program, from November 1st to January 31st, helps international students improve their Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing (LSRW) skills to join regular classes in February seamlessly.
University-wide Writing Seminar: Liberal Arts faculty lead these seminars to enhance students’ writing skills, emphasising the importance of the human touch in writing, even in the age of AI tools like ChatGPT.
Foreign Language Programs: We offer minors and electives in French, German, Persian, Mandarin, and Arabic. Our department also hosts various seminars and conferences across different genres, such as the recent National Seminar on History and Traditional Medicine held on May 10-11.
These initiatives reflect our commitment to providing a holistic educational experience beyond the classroom.
3. How are interdisciplinary perspectives and research initiatives integrated into the Liberal Arts curriculum at Shoolini University?
The time has passed when we focused on a single course or subject. Today, even in Liberal Arts, our research incorporates insights from science and management to make our work accessible and relevant to broader audiences. Focusing solely on one discipline limits the publishability and readability of research.
Collaboration with various departments is crucial. In 2023, our Liberal Arts faculty and scholars published 21 papers — all in collaboration with colleagues from both Indian and international universities. Platforms like Journal Storage (JSTOR), which offers access to over 12 million resources in 75 disciplines, are vital for our students.
We also encourage participation in diverse seminars and conferences to broaden students’ perspectives and learning experiences. This exposure ensures that our Liberal Arts program at Shoolini University remains impactful and comprehensive.
4.How do you promote diversity, equity, and inclusion among faculty and students?
Our department champions diversity, equity, and inclusion by having faculty from around the world, ensuring everyone is respected equally. Beyond paper publications, book writing is a significant focus in our department, reflecting our commitment to diverse scholarly contributions. Our faculty’s writing skills are a standout feature. For example, Foreign language teacher Chen Mong Chun has translated two books into Mandarin, Assistant Professor Prakash Chand recently published a book, and I have authored a book in Hindi.
5.What are the most popular courses at the Chitrakoot School of Liberal Arts?
Our BA Liberal Arts program offers specialisations in English, Political Science, and History. At the master’s level, we offer MA degrees in English and Political Science, and at the PhD level, we provide programs in English, History, and Political Science. We have also introduced the Summit Research Program (SRP) for BA students, focusing on research from the very beginning to enhance their familiarity and expertise in this area.
6.What is the career scope of Liberal Arts in India, and how does the program prepare students for real-world challenges?
Liberal Arts graduates have diverse career opportunities in administrative services, teaching, copywriting, journalism, banking, and government services. Our department supports these pursuits by allowing time for exam preparation and coaching through our partnership with Vivek Academy in Chandigarh.
Our program offers a well-rounded education through exposure to various disciplines and real-world experiences. We have MOUs with foreign universities for student and faculty exchange programs. Last semester, students participated in a six-month exchange program in Taiwan, which included paid internships, providing valuable international exposure.
7.Can you share some inspiring student stories?
Absolutely! Our students have achieved remarkable success. For instance, Rsvika Tripathi has authored two books, and Malika Pathania represented Himachal Pradesh in the Youth Parliament. Our students consistently excel in various competitions, reflecting the dynamic culture we’ve cultivated. At our department, we believe that real-life experiences are just as meaningful as academic learning.
8.What is your vision for the Chitrakoot School of Liberal Arts, and where do you see Shoolini University in five years?
I believe the Chitrakoot School of Liberal Arts will be the best in India within the next five years. Our relentless dedication and hard work ensure that faculty and students shine in every promotional and academic opportunity. My goal as the head of the school is to elevate it to a level where everyone aspires to join us, not just for classroom learning or reading sessions, but for the unique experiences and lifelong relationships we cultivate. We focus on teaching humanitarian values, making our Liberal Arts program truly exceptional.
Shoolini University, in collaboration with Fortis Hospital, recently hosted a national workshop titled ‘Bridging Preclinical and Clinical Research in Drug Discovery’. This event aimed to equip participants with the essential knowledge and tools to bridge the gap between preclinical and clinical research.
The workshop began with a welcome address by Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Dean Prof Deepak N Kapoor. He highlighted the critical disconnect between the preclinical and clinical stages of drug discovery. Following this, Prof Rohit Goyal introduced Shoolini University’s research facilities, emphasising their significant contributions to sustainable development goals, energy conservation, and agronomy.
Associate Professor Lalit Sharma welcomed the delegates, providing an overview of the upcoming sessions. He emphasised the importance of seamlessly connecting preclinical and clinical studies.
A key highlight of the workshop was the unveiling of ‘TechBook’, a quick guide to animal handling and behavioural tests. The guide was introduced by delegates including Prof Nirmal Singh from Punjabi University, Patiala, Shoolini University Founder Chancellor Prof PK Khosla, and Prof Deepak N Kapoor. Prof Khosla shared inspiring life stories, stressing the importance of coming prepared to class and the inspiration behind establishing a research-focused university.
Prof Nirmal Singh delivered a compelling keynote address on ‘Ethics in Experiments in Animals’. He discussed historical outbreaks that led to the development of essential guidelines and regulations in animal ethics and highlighted the crucial role of animal studies in drug discovery, such as vaccines for TB and polio.
In an online session, Prof SS Sharma, Head of Pharmacology at NIPER, Mohali, addressed the ‘Translational Challenges in CNS Drug Discovery’. He explained the drug development journey from initial target selection to clinical trials and therapeutics, adding that about 85% of drugs never reach the market due to safety concerns. The session was moderated by Shoolini University Dean of Research and Development Prof Sourabh Kulshreshtha and Associate Professor Parveen Verma.
The day concluded with a practical session on toxicity studies according to OECD guidelines, followed by a demonstration of ongoing research models for asthma, addiction, and inflammation in animals.
Around 80 participants, including researchers, students, and pharmaceutical professionals, attended the workshop. They explored strategies for effectively translating promising preclinical findings into successful clinical trials, making the event a significant step towards advancing drug discovery research.
Shoolini University recently hosted a National Seminar in collaboration with the Indian Council of Historical Research, Chitrakoot School of Liberal Arts (CSLA), and the School of Biotechnology. The topic of the two-day seminar held on May 10-11th was ‘Exploring the History of Traditional Medicine in the Himalayas’. The seminar discussed important issues like the wisdom of the mountains, old and new remedies, and how traditional medicine could also be a business opportunity.
After the welcome address by Assistant Professor Nitika Thakur, the soulful rendition of Saraswati Vandana mesmerised the guests. Shoolini University Director of Planning Prof JM Julka and the Ayurveda Acharya Chander Gupt were the guests of honour.
Prof Purnima Bali, head of the Chitrakoot School of Liberal Arts, addressed the audience, setting the stage for an educative discussion. Assistant Prof Ekta Singh contextualised the theme of the seminar.
Starting the discussion, Prof JM Jhulka shared his profound experiences spanning over six decades, particularly his lifelong engagement with traditional medicinal herbs. He expressed his faith in medicinal herbs and encouraged the audience to depend more on nature for a long and healthy life.
Ayurveda Acharya Chander Gupt and Purnima Bali started the first interactive session of Day 1 with a discussion revolving around the benefits of Ayurveda. The Ayurveda Acharya explained the difference between Ayurveda and Homeopathy, emphasising the importance of lifestyle for overall wellness.
Assistant Professor Neelam Negi from the Department of History, HNB, Garhwal University, Uttarakhand, scooped into the rich history of traditional medicines in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. She highlighted the medicinal properties of rare herbs found in the region.
Tracing the history of Kangra Tea, Assistant Professor Rohit Sharma explained the historical significance and the ongoing efforts to revive its importance. Talking about the age-old medications derived from the Himalayas, Prof Rohit Goyal demonstrated their effectiveness in modern times. Scholar Nikhil Thakur enchanted the audience with his oral presentation on the folk healing practices of the Gaddi Tribe, bridging ancient wisdom with contemporary healthcare.
During the second session of Day 1, Assistant Professor Tara Devi Sen from the Department of Botany at Vallabh Government College, Mandi, talked about discovering forgotten remedies in Himalayan wild foods. Talking about overall health, Asst Prof Tara Devi added, “There are many ways to incorporate medicinal herbs into our daily life, such as by preparing salads, snacks, juice, curries, etc.”
Prof Deepak Kumar expressed how traditional medicines can help discover new drugs. He pointed out that combining traditional medication with modern drugs can lead to fewer side effects, making them safer.
The first day ended on a high note with a vibrant cultural programme, celebrating the diverse heritage of the Himalayas.
On the second day of the session, Principal Scientist Amit Chawla from the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, delivered a presentation on the ‘Conservation of Threatened Medicinal Plants’. He explained the crucial role these plants played in the food web and underlined the need to prevent their extinction. Chawla also discussed the medicinal value of each plant species and emphasised the importance of preserving these natural resources.
Following this, Assistant Professor Radha focused on traditional medicinal knowledge in the cold desert of the Northwestern Himalayan region. She highlighted the significance of Saussurea obvallata, a plant revered in the Himalayas for its purity and healing properties. This sacred plant is a valuable part of the region’s traditional medicine.
Dean of Research, Professor Sourabh Kulshreshtha, then shared insights on the numerous benefits of Moringa oleifera, commonly known as ‘The Miracle Tree’. He explained, “The leaves of this tree are rich in nutrients and possess healing properties, making it a valuable resource for various health applications. The seeds of Moringa oleifera can also purify contaminated water.”
Concluding the session, Akshay Sharma addressed the valedictory audience with a discussion on the benefits of learning Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine used to cure various illnesses. He added, “Ayurveda is gaining popularity globally due to its holistic approach to health and wellness.” Seminar convenor Dr Ashoo Khosla, the Chief Learning Officer at Shoolini, thanked the attendees.
The Seminar served as a platform for scholarly exchange, reaffirming the rich legacy of traditional medicines in the Himalayas and their enduring relevance in contemporary healthcare practices.
