  • Sameer on PhD Journey from Shoolini to Florida

    Sameer Pathan, a bright student from Solan, Himachal Pradesh, is taking his academic journey to new heights with a fully funded PhD in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Florida, USA. His focus will be on metal oxides and their catalytic applications—a path that began during his time at Shoolini University, where he completed his Master’s in Chemistry.  

    Reflecting on his decision to join Shoolini, Sameer says, “Choosing Shoolini felt right because of its top-notch research and location close to home.” He became interested in chemistry during his undergraduate years, but Shoolini’s hands-on research and focus on learning solidified his path in inorganic chemistry and shaped his future. 

    During his Master’s, Sameer worked on important research projects and co-authored two review articles. “I gained a deep understanding of research methodologies, literature review, and academic writing, especially in organic chemistry, thanks to Associate Professor Praveen Kumar Verma,” Sameer shared. These experiences strengthened his research skills, helping him secure a place at the University of Florida.

At Florida, Sameer is keen to understand how materials behave at the molecular level.  

    What is his advice to his juniors? Stay curious, and never hesitate to ask questions! He emphasised building strong relationships with mentors and always being ready to step out of the comfort zone.

    Looking to the future, the PhD Scholar hopes to continue contributing to sustainable chemical processes in academia or industry. He is also passionate about mentoring future chemists and bridging the gap between research and practical applications.

  • Creative Expression Marks Suicide Prevention Day 

    On World Suicide Prevention Day, Shoolini University planned a series of events where students talked about mental health openly and creatively. Organised by Club Arcadia and the Centre of Psychology and Behavioural Sciences, the event focused on suicide prevention, with students and faculty sharing their thoughts through art and discussion. 

    The Milkha Singh Indoor Stadium was buzzing with energy as students participated in poster-making, slogan-writing, and poetry competitions. It wasn’t just about winning — it was about finding a way to speak up about mental health. The heartfelt entries expressed the importance of talking about difficult issues like depression and suicide. 

    The event also featured a deeply impactful awareness talk. Founder Chancellor Prof PK Khosla, Chief Learning Officer Dr Ashoo Khosla, and Director, Yogananda School of Spirituality and Happiness, Prof Saamdu Chetri emphasised creating a more empathetic campus environment where everyone could openly discuss mental health. They talked about how small acts of kindness, listening to one another, and open conversations could make a big difference. 

    A student art exhibition, inaugurated by Prof Khosla, showcased powerful work on the theme ‘Life is to Live, Not to End’. Posters, poems, and slogans lined the walls, each carrying a personal message reminding viewers of life’s value and the importance of reaching out for help when needed. 

    As the day wrapped up, students gathered for an award ceremony to honour those who stood out in the competitions. Muskan Garg’s slogan took first place, followed by Urja and Sakshi Dogra. In the poetry competition, Apoorva won first prize, with Rafia Aman and Palak Raghuvanshi taking second and third places. The art and craft competition had Palki in the lead, followed by Khushi Bamothra and Zanem. In the group category, Vansh, Divyanshu, and Rishab took the top spot, with Riya, Vedika, and Anaya coming in second, and Prachi Ray and Samridhi Kohli securing third. 

    By encouraging open discussions and using creative outlets, the university is helping break the stigma around mental health, making sure no one feels like they’re struggling alone.

  • Students Showcase Innovation at Research Conclave

    Shoolini University’s Student Research Council (SRC), in collaboration with iHUB, organised a Student Research Conclave and a day-long symposium titled ‘Advanced Technology Impacting the Social Economy’. Supported by iHUB DivyaSampark at IIT Roorkee, the event aimed to promote innovation and research among students, featuring expert talks, keynote addresses, and student showcases. 

    The event opened with a welcome address by Prof Pankaj Vaidya, head of the Yogananda School of AI, Computers and Data Science. Ramanujan Research Associate and SRC founder Anitya Gupta delivered the keynote address, highlighting the council’s mission to build a research-driven environment.  

    Prof Deepak Kumar, iHUB Shoolini Coordinator and Professor at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, updated the audience about iHUB Shoolini’s progress, focusing on emerging technologies like Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), the Internet of Things (IoT), and drones. He acknowledged the continuous support of the university leadership, including Founder Chancellor Prof PK Khosla, Vice Chancellor Prof Atul Khosla, President of Innovation and Marketing Prof Ashish Khosla, and iHUB DivyaSampark CEO Manish Anand. 

    Addressing the audience, the Chancellor emphasised the importance of innovation and translational research, particularly in healthcare. He announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for students publishing research papers in the prestigious Nature journal, with an additional Rs 25,000 for their mentors. 

    The symposium featured expert discussions on student and university funding opportunities, including a presentation by Prof Sujit Banerjee, former Senior Director at the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Prof Harish Sahu from DRDO shared insights into the development of quantum technologies. 

    Assistant Professor Piyush moderated a panel discussion on ‘Advanced Technologies Impacting the Social Economy’. The panel included experts like Prof Banerjee, Prof Sahu, Prof Manju Khari from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The panel explored the societal and economic implications of AI, blockchain, and IoT, focusing on digital upskilling and the challenges of job displacement. 

    Students showcased their innovative ideas during the research conclave. Anmol Malhotra, a third-year BSc Biotechnology student won first prize for his business model on ‘Stem Cells from Menstrual Blood’. Monika, a research scholar from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, secured second place for her presentation on ‘Green Synthesis of ZnO Nanoparticles Using Rumex Nepalensis Spreng’. Bhawna Gautam, a second-year MBA student, earned third place for her app, providing localised information to tourists. 

    Anitya Gupta shared that the university was in talks with DRDO, led by Gaurav Gupta, to secure internships for select students. Several ideas from the symposium are being refined for submission to DRDO and DST. 

    The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof MS Thakur from the Core Engineering department.

  • Shoolini, RKMV Secure ₹25-Lakh ICSSR Grant for Research 

    To promote agricultural innovation in Himachal Pradesh, Shoolini University, in collaboration with Rajkiya Kanya MahaVidyalaya (RKMV) Shimla, has been awarded a ₹25 Lakh grant by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). This grant will fuel a groundbreaking research project titled ‘Capacity Building and Youth Perception of Agriculture Entrepreneurship in Himachal Pradesh’. 

    The research will solve a pressing need in the region – empowering youth to explore agricultural entrepreneurship as a viable career path. The project will identify ways to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and resources required to succeed in the growing agri-business sector by focusing on capacity-building initiatives. 

    Led by the Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS) at Shoolini University, this collaborative effort brings together a distinguished team of scholars. Key contributors from Shoolini University include Assistant Professor from the School of Business Management Abhilasha Chauhan, and Dean of Academics Prof Narinder Verma. Associate Professor from the Faculty of Legal Sciences, Chander Mohan, is also an integral part of the project. 

    On the RKMV side, Associate Professor Anurita Saxena, along with Assistant Professors Munish Sharma and Reenu Devi, bring their expertise from the Government College for Girls, Shimla, enriching the project’s academic and practical insights. 

    Beyond academic research, the project can make a lasting impact by critically evaluating government schemes such as the Chief Minister’s startup scheme. By identifying gaps and areas for improvement in these programs, the research aims to offer actionable recommendations that can shape future policies. These improvements could lead to more effective support for local agri-entrepreneurs, encouraging sustainable growth in rural economies.

  • Healthy Living Takes Centrestage on National Nutrition Week 

    In a vibrant showcase of health and wellness, Shoolini University’s Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the School of Bioengineering and Food Technology celebrated National Nutrition Week. This year’s theme, ‘Nutritious Diets for Everyone‘, resonated with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, focusing on the vital role of nutrition throughout all stages of life. 

    The week began with an opening ceremony attended by Shoolini University Founder Chancellor Prof PK Khosla, Registrar Prof Sunil Puri, Dean of Research and Development Prof Sourabh Kulshreshtha, and Head of the Department Prof Dinesh Kumar. 

    Throughout the National Nutrition week, the campus buzzed with activities designed to engage and educate. Students and staff participated in one-on-one nutrition counselling sessions led by MSc and BSc Nutrition students. These sessions utilised a Body Composition Analyzer to evaluate 14 nutritional parameters, offering personalised dietary advice tailored to individual health needs. 

    The engagement extended beyond the university, with a group of students and faculty members visiting a nearby military campus. They spent time with military families, highlighting the importance of nutrition through an engaging talk by Asst Prof Mamta Chandel. The visit also included fun physical challenges and a quiz competition, bringing the community together. 

    A highlight of the week was the Nutrition Extempore Competition, where students sparred over topics like ‘Plant-based Diet vs Meat-based Diet’ and ‘Modern Nutrition Science vs Ayurvedic Nutrition Science’. The competitive spirit was palpable as teams argued their cases, showcasing their knowledge and quick thinking. 

    Creativity continued to flourish in a cooking competition that saw students whip up nutritious, cost-effective meals using traditional and modern cooking techniques. A panel of 11 faculty members judged the dishes on taste, nutritional value, and cost-effectiveness, celebrating the culinary skills of the participants. 

    Adding a futuristic twist, the Nutrition Week also featured a webinar on the nutritional challenges of space exploration. The webinar, led by Space Food Club founder Zaid Khan, explored the dietary needs of astronauts and the latest advancements in space food technology. 

    The department also celebrated National Sports Day on August 29, featuring a guest lecture by renowned sports dietitian Ansa Saju, further enriching the week’s diverse learning experiences.

    Ancient China 

    China’s oldest known medical text is the Shennong Bencao Jing, written in the 1st century AD. This book, attributed to the mythical figure Shennong, listed medicinal plants and their uses. Earlier texts like the ‘Recipes for 52 Ailments’, found in a tomb sealed in 168 BC, also contributed to Chinese medicine. 

    Ancient Greece and Rome 

    In Greece, figures like Diocles of Carystus (4th century BC) were early experts in medicinal plants. The Greek doctor Pedanius Dioscorides wrote a five-volume book called De Materia Medica in the 1st century AD. His work became a key reference for many years. 

    Japan 

    In Japan, during the Asuka (538-710) and Nara (710-794) periods, people who worked like today’s pharmacists were highly respected. They were ranked above doctors and acupuncturists in the Imperial court. 

    Islamic Golden Age 

    The first drug stores were established in in Baghdad in 754 AD under the Abbasid Caliphate. By the 9th century, the state regulated these pharmacies, showing advanced organisation and professionalism in medicine. 

    Renaissance and Early Modern Times 

    During the Renaissance (14th-17th centuries), pharmacy saw major advancements. The development of more precise methods for making medicines and establishing pharmacy schools marked a new era. The 18th and 19th centuries saw pharmacy becoming more formal and regulated.

    Shoolini University recently hosted an enriching session led by Kiran Seth, the visionary founder of the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Among Youth (SPICMACAY). As part of the university’s Guru Series, the event drew students, staff, and guests from various educational institutions. 

    The session was attended by prominent figures, including the MMU Vice Chancellor, faculty from Government College Solan, and principals and teachers from BL Central, Pine Grove, and Chinmay Schools. Shoolini University Founder Chancellor Prof PK Khosla and Innovation and Marketing President Prof Ashish Khosla also participated in the event. 

    Kiran Seth delivered an inspiring talk on ‘Freedom and Discipline’, connecting ancient wisdom with modern educational practices. He spoke about the historical pursuit of freedom abroad, highlighting that today’s generation can find the same freedom within India. However, he noted that too much freedom, like excessive restrictions, can also be detrimental. “Our ancestors knew how to enjoy freedom because they had an anchor that prevented them from getting lost,” Kiran Seth explained, referring to the discipline and focus of the mind that can be nurtured through practices like yoga, meditation, and classical music.

  • New Cooling Tech Extends Solar Panel Lifespan 

    Solar energy is playing an increasingly crucial role in the global shift towards a low-carbon economy. As a clean, renewable power source, it offers a promising solution to combat climate change and ensure energy security. However, one of the biggest challenges solar power installations face, particularly in regions with extreme temperatures, is the loss of efficiency when solar panels overheat. 

    Researchers at Shoolini University have developed an innovative method to tackle this issue, potentially revolutionising the efficiency of solar power plants. Under the Photovoltaics Research Group at the Centre of Excellence in Energy Science and Technology, the team has focused on using thermoelectric coolers (TECs) to keep solar panels at optimal temperatures, boosting their power output. 

    Unlike traditional air or water cooling methods, which have limitations, TECs are solid-state devices that can precisely manage the temperature of solar panel by converting excess heat into electricity. This dual function not only keeps the panels cool but also contributes to their energy output. 

    The team, led by Assistant Professor Rahul Chandel and Prof Shyam Singh Chandel, conducted their research in Shimla, experimenting with two polycrystalline silicon solar panels. One panel was fitted with a thermoelectric cooler and a water cooling system, while the other was left uncooled. The results were striking: the cooled panel maintained a stable temperature of around 25°C, whereas the uncooled panel soared to temperatures as high as 63°C. This significant temperature difference demonstrated the effectiveness of TECs in preventing overheating and enhancing panel efficiency. 

    The implications of this innovation are far-reaching. By reducing thermal stress on the panels, TECs can extend their lifespan, thereby reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimising waste. This technology is particularly beneficial in hot climates where traditional solar panels often struggle, potentially expanding access to clean energy in remote and underdeveloped areas. Moreover, reducing panel overheating could lead to cost savings and promote economic growth by lowering the overall expenses associated with solar power installations. 

    Additionally, this advancement aligns with global sustainability goals, including the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to affordable and clean energy (SDG 7) and climate action (SDG 13). 

    Shoolini University Vice Chancellor Professor Atul Khosla, lauded Asst Prof Rahul Chandel and Prof Shyam Singh Chandel for their groundbreaking work. “This research has the potential to transform how solar energy is harnessed worldwide,” he noted, emphasising the impact of their findings, which have already been highlighted in the prestigious PV magazine.
