  • Beyond Academics: Sibiraj Authors ‘The Tale of Hope’

Author… environmentalist… research scholar. Sibiraj Murugesan from Chennai is an undergrad at Shoolini University, who has gone above and beyond academics. Through his heartwarming children’s novel ‘The Tale of Hope’, Sibiraj addresses an issue close to his heart — muscular dystrophy. With this touching narrative, he has enlightened young minds and brought into focus the challenges that the affected children have to battle daily, thus bringing inclusivity and self-acceptance to its young readers.

Through relatable characters, including those from the animal kingdom, like cows and cockroaches, he masterfully weaves a tale that encourages self-acceptance and empowers young readers to break free from their mental constraints from a tender age.

During his time as a Shoolini volunteer at the Indian Association of Muscular Dystrophy (IAMD), Sibiraj was profoundly moved by the enthusiasm and zest for life displayed by the children affected by muscular dystrophy. This ignited in him a deep desire to create a positive impact in their lives. Discovering a significant gap in children’s literature for the community, he crafted a compelling picture book that weaves together simple yet powerful characters to teach the virtues of self-acceptance.

Sibiraj acknowledges the support of Atul Khosla, the founder and Vice Chancellor of Shoolini University, whose funding played a crucial role in bringing ‘The Tale of Hope’ to life. He also appreciates Poonam Nanda, the Dean of Student Welfare, for believing in his vision and encouraging him.

He has pledged to donate all proceeds from the book to the IAMD. ‘The Tale of Hope’ is available on Amazon in various countries, including India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, Italy, and Japan.

In addition, Sibiraj is passionate about environmental research and is investigating biochar’s potential and its application in wastewater treatment. “I am working on decolourisation and detoxification of azo dyes using Biochar synthesised from a novel material (areca catechu). If I succeed, we could treat the textile wastewater more effectively and economically feasible, protecting our surface and groundwater resources,” he explained.

His love for the environment comes from his grandparents, who were organic farmers. Growing up in the bustling city of Chennai, he was driven by the desire to find solutions for pollution. His professors too encouraged him to undertake this significant research endeavour. Though unsure of his capabilities to take on such a substantial project at first, his doubts were dispelled by the assurance and warmth of his mentors.

Sibiraj inspires everyone, showcasing that hard work and dedication can significantly impact society and the environment, slowly changing our world.

  • Revolutionary Patent for Sustainable & Affordable Concrete Roads

Tireless in their efforts towards a sustainable planet, Shoolini researchers have evolved a groundbreaking method to improve road construction practices. They have devised a way to prepare bituminous concrete mixes using fly ash and waste polyethylene. Another plus, this will also effectively address waste management challenges.

In a nutshell, explained Shoolini faculty member Dr MS Thakur, “It is a three-fold achievement. By replacing 2-6 per cent of the concrete mixture with plastic, we have reduced the cost by 10 per cent, increasing the strength of the mix and decreasing the quantity of the existing plastic waste simultaneously.”

The idea evolved from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) regarding the utilisation of waste and its management and Shoolini’s focus and conscious efforts towards sustainability.

What’s more, the government has already granted a patent to the team of researchers, including Noorullah Yusufi, Er Vikas Mehta, Dr MS Thakur, and Priyanka Panchal, for the new method.

The patented method has far-reaching implications for the construction industry and the environment. Not only does it provide a sustainable use for waste materials, but it also reduces the overall environmental footprint of road construction projects. By diverting fly ash and waste polyethylene from landfills, Shoolini University’s invention promotes a circular economy and contributes to waste management efforts.

Traditional methods of producing bituminous concrete mixes relied heavily on natural resources, such as stone aggregates and bitumen. However, the extraction and processing of these materials come with significant environmental concerns and consequences. Additionally, the disposal of waste polyethylene and fly ash, byproducts of various industries, poses a serious challenge. Recognising the need for a sustainable solution, the inventors at Shoolini University embarked on a mission to revolutionise the road construction industry.

The method involves fly ash, a byproduct of coal combustion, as a partial replacement for stone aggregates in bituminous concrete mixes. This method not only reduces the demand for raw materials but also diverts fly ash from landfills, mitigating its environmental impact. Moreover, the inventors discovered that incorporating waste polyethylene, commonly found in plastic bags and packaging, enhances the performance and durability of the bitumen.

By modifying the bitumen with waste polyethylene, the inventors improved its elasticity and resistance. This leads to enhanced mechanical properties of the bituminous concrete mixes, giving longer-lasting roads. The use of fly ash and waste polyethylene also contributes to cost-effectiveness, as it reduces dependence on expensive stone aggregates and bitumen, making road construction more affordable, especially in regions where these resources are scarce.

Congratulating the team, Shoolini University Chancellor and Founder Professor PK Khosla said the invention was a testament to Shoolini University’s dedication to innovation and sustainability. “We are proud to contribute to the development of environmentally friendly solutions that enhance the performance of our infrastructure,” he added.

  • Redefining Education at School of Media & Communications

Nishtha Shukla Anand is a mom, an accomplished journalist, a digital entrepreneur, and an influential figure in the world of education. With extensive experience in prestigious global and Indian media houses, she has established herself as a seasoned professional. As the founder of Techthirsty.com and recipient of the Google Woman Entrepreneur of the Year award, Nishtha has made a significant impact in digital publishing. Her leadership as Executive Trustee of the Foundation of Life Sciences and Business Management and Director of Shoolini University has helped shape the educational landscape. Additionally, she offers content marketing services through Pen Pundit, supporting startups and blue-chip companies.

As Director of the School of Media and Communications at Shoolini University, Nishtha shares her vision of the media school and how it will change the skill development and employability of Shoolini students.

What are the key features and unique aspects of the School of Media and Communications?

The School of Media and Communications comes from a space where we feel digital-first is the way to create better skills among professionals in all areas of life. It comes from the belief that quality content is integral to any media. As communication becomes more rapid and dynamic, the mode is evolving quickly. The need of the hour is to upskill students to keep up with these changes and create and disseminate information in new and innovative ways. That’s where the concept of the new Media School, where creativity meets technology, took shape.

What is the motivation behind the School?

The decision to establish the school at Shoolini University stemmed from a meaningful conversation with a young mother who sought to restart her professional journey. She expressed her interest in pursuing a digital marketing course, enquiring about my journey in the field.

This made me realise that our generation had never formally studied digital marketing. Instead, we acquired knowledge through practical experiences and self-learning. So, I wanted to launch programs that empowered individuals to enhance their skills in content creation and the digital space. When I started my first venture, PenPundit Media, in 2006, I recognised the immense potential of providing remote work opportunities for women. Witnessing firsthand the flexibility and numerous possibilities that proficiency in technology and content creation can offer, I was motivated to establish a media school that would equip individuals with the necessary skills to thrive in the constantly evolving digital landscape.

We incorporate two essential pillars into every course offered by our media school: Technology (specifically digital advancements) and Entrepreneurship. As I witness the ever-changing landscape of content creation and media, along with the emergence of technologies like AR, VR, META, and others, it becomes evident that we must equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in this new era. Our goal is to engage students in a curriculum that combines entrepreneurship, technology, and data analytics while fostering their innate creativity and enabling them to produce compelling content in this dynamic space.

Are there any partnerships or collaborations with media organisations or industry professionals to enhance the learning experience?

Absolutely! We are actively engaged in discussions with the BBC to explore a potential partnership with their renowned diversity program known as 50:50. Additionally, we are in talks with The Economist to collaborate on compelling data programs that can be implemented at Shoolini. We are also exploring partnerships with various industry verticals in India to offer specialised event management, gaming, and animation courses.

What are the career prospects for graduates?

Moreover, with the ever-growing digital media, our graduates will thrive in the digital-first landscape, making a mark on online platforms.

How do you prepare students to adapt to the rapidly evolving media landscape?

We have an engaging and dynamic Advisory Board that actively contributes to developing our hands-on learning experiences.
