Tireless in their efforts towards a sustainable planet, Shoolini researchers have evolved a groundbreaking method to improve road construction practices. They have devised a way to prepare bituminous concrete mixes using fly ash and waste polyethylene. Another plus, this will also effectively address waste management challenges.
In a nutshell, explained Shoolini faculty member Dr MS Thakur, “It is a three-fold achievement. By replacing 2-6 per cent of the concrete mixture with plastic, we have reduced the cost by 10 per cent, increasing the strength of the mix and decreasing the quantity of the existing plastic waste simultaneously.”
The idea evolved from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) regarding the utilisation of waste and its management and Shoolini’s focus and conscious efforts towards sustainability.
What’s more, the government has already granted a patent to the team of researchers, including Noorullah Yusufi, Er Vikas Mehta, Dr MS Thakur, and Priyanka Panchal, for the new method.

Recognising the need for a sustainable solution, the inventors at Shoolini University embarked on a mission to revolutionise the road construction industry.
The method involves fly ash, a byproduct of coal combustion, as a partial replacement for stone aggregates in bituminous concrete mixes. This method not only reduces the demand for raw materials but also diverts fly ash from landfills, mitigating its environmental impact. Moreover, the inventors discovered that incorporating waste polyethylene, commonly found in plastic bags and packaging, enhances the performance and durability of the bitumen.
By modifying the bitumen with waste polyethylene, the inventors improved its elasticity and resistance. Shoolini University decided to celebrate this World Environment Day differently. Apart from a series of engaging educational activities aimed at raising awareness about pressing environmental issues, Shoolini student volunteers visited Majholi Government School.
The young students at the school engaged in an innovative and interactive session with Shoolini volunteers for collective action and positive changes for a sustainable future. The activities included Kulhad Painting and a movie screening based on plastic waste. These proved to be fun and life-changing experiences for the creative little minds — the frontline volunteers of a sustainable future.
Besides, the university also organised a ‘Graveyard’ activity to shed light on the alarming statistics of tobacco consumption and its environmental hazards. University students participated enthusiastically in this activity, aimed to create awareness about the detrimental effects of tobacco on human health and the environment.

Shoolini University, in collaboration with the National Commission for Women (NCW), recently organised the inaugural ‘Capacity Building and Personal Development Programme’. The seminar, aimed at promoting gender equality and empowering women, received overwhelming participation from girl students across various prestigious institutions.
Of the 152 universities that applied for the Capacity Building and Personality Development seminar, Shoolini University was among the 61 selected institutions. The event witnessed the attendance of girl students from SILB, Nursing College, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, and Shoolini University, making it an impactful gathering.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) is a statutory body that serves as an advocate for the rights of Indian women, advising the government on policies affecting women. The commission provided valuable support to the programme, further highlighting its commitment to empowering women and addressing issues of concern.
The seminar focused on securing women’s rights and entitlements through effective policy formulation, legislative measures, law enforcement, scheme implementation, and strategies to combat discrimination and violence against women.
The event commenced with the opening address by Shoolini Foundation and SILB President Saroj Khosla, who emphasised the innate qualities of women, such as intuition and kindness. She encouraged the attendees to practice the affirmation ‘I can do it; I will do it’ and recognised the pivotal role of girls as builders of the nation.
As keynote speaker, Indira Gandhi Sadhana Awardee and Research Projects Director, Shoolini University, UK Neogi talked about empowering women globally. He highlighted the objective of promoting women’s empowerment through capacity building and personality development, focusing on employment preparedness, interpersonal skills, and creative thinking.
Practising lawyer and chief guest Delina Khongdup pointed out that the National Commission for Women’s website, ncw.inc.in had a complaint cell for women to voice their grievances. She emphasised that a country could not be called a “developed country” unless its women were empowered. Khongdup also emphasised the Women’s Day 2023 theme, ‘DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’.
Discussing cybercrimes, Delhi Management Education and Research Institute Dean Deepshika Kalra highlighted application features designed to protect the interests of women. She discussed Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Sheets, showcasing security features to safeguard personal information.
Shoolini University Associate Professor Amar Rao shared valuable insights on essential abilities for workplace success. He emphasised effective communication, problem-solving, teamwork, adaptability, and time management as crucial skills for a thriving career.
The seminar also featured an engaging question-answer session led by Dean Student Welfare Poonam Nanda.
