  • Books and Beyond: A New Chapter at Penguin Random House 

    Life is full of unexpected twists, and working at a publishing house like Penguin Random House has been one of them. As an avid reader, I could never have pictured myself here, yet here I am. My experience here has been an overwhelming process of learning. From applying to getting accepted, I learned to be patient and trust in God’s timing.  

    I will never forget my first day at work. My nerves got the better of me, and I survived on a bar of chocolate for the entire day — just because I was too anxious to eat in the office. The sight of colourful books lining the shelves and the smell of coffee wafting through the air made the place feel more like a chic cafe than a typical office.  

    Stepping into unchartered territory, I have learnt so much. This gives me the strength to face the future with confidence. Yet, I remain humble, aware there’s still much to learn. I’m grateful for the wonderful people I’ve met. Their presence transformed mundane experiences into an exciting adventure. 

    Initially, tales of the tough corporate life worried me, but luckily, my first stint as an intern was really positive. I spent my days crafting newsletters, chasing down media platforms and influencers for collaborations, brainstorming fresh marketing ideas, drafting pitches for upcoming books, and watching how our titles performed on Amazon. 

    As time progressed, each day brought a new challenge, and I learned a bit more with each one. Soon, I discovered that this hands-on, learn-as-you-go method enhanced my skills and made work more fun. This was an important lesson as it taught me to love what I do and enjoy new beginnings. 

    I also deeply appreciate my professors, who supported me from the beginning. They were there when I felt lost, choosing my path, and cheering me on during my interviews. Their guidance has been invaluable. Life’s outcomes may be uncertain, but I remain optimistic and view every experience as an opportunity to grow.

    From Shoolini to Europe: Prathama Accepted into Multiple Master’s Programs  

    Prathama Das, a final year B Tech Biotech SRP student at Shoolini University has been accepted into multiple master’s programs across Europe. She has received acceptance offers from the Erasmus Mundus Master’s program ‘Be in Precision Medicine’, spanning the Universitat de Barcelona in Spain, University of Naples Federico II in Italy, and Université Grenoble Alpes in France. Additionally, she has been accepted into the Joint Master’s Program offered by Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University in Sweden for Molecular Techniques in Life Science, as well as into the University of Glasgow in Scotland for MSc Precision Medicine (Cancer Specialism) and MSc in Cancer Research and Precision Oncology.   

    Her fascination with Biotechnology began at the age of 12, and it flourished during her undergraduate years at Shoolini University. She cultivated a strong passion for bioinformatics, computational biology, and structural biology along her academic journey as an SRP student and looks forward to studying research that integrates these domains.   

    Prathama’s SRP mentor, Prof Deepak Kumar, motivated her to pursue diverse research opportunities, including publishing review articles and working as a CHANAKYA UG fellow in his lab. Grateful to her mentor, she said, “Deepak Sir helped me build a strong research profile and encouraged me to apply for master’s programs.     Rithika Chunduri Accepted to Prestigious UK Universities for MSc Programs  

    The final year B Tech Biotechnology SRP student at Shoolini, Rithika Chunduri, has successfully secured admissions to two esteemed UK universities. She has a stellar academic record and a passion for neuroscience.   

    Rithika’s academic journey has been remarkable. She has been selected for MSc Neuroscience program at Kings College London and MSc Brain Science program at the University of Glasgow. Additionally, her academic prowess earned her an offer from Radboud University (top 250 globally by QS and top 150 by THE), Netherlands, for MSc in Biomedical Sciences with a specialisation in Neuroscience.  

    Previously, she went for an internship in Taiwan and a summer internship at Caltech, USA. Grateful for her success, Rithika acknowledged the guidance and support of her mentor at Shoolini University.

  • From North to South… Shoolini Celebrates Diversity

    Shoolini University recently organised two cultural events celebrating the rich traditions of students from Northeast India and South India at the Open Air Theatre (OAT).

    On April 15th, students from the Northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, and Sikkim came together to present their vibrant cultures and customs. Students from each state showcased their culture in different forms, such as singing, dancing and poetry recitation. Students from the various states spoke a few words about what made their homeland special. However, the highlight of the event was the captivating Bihu dance from Assam, which enthralled the audience with its delicate and graceful movements.

    Similarly, on April 18th and 19th, the South Indian students of Shoolini University celebrated their regional New Year festivals, including Tamil Puthandu, Telugu Kannada Ugadi, and Malayalam Vishu. The celebration started with a movie night where they enjoyed ‘Manjummel Boys’ at the Cineplex on the campus. The following day, a small ritual ceremony was performed as a form of respect to the Gods before they proceeded to other activities of the day. In the spirit of cultural exchange, a session called ‘Fun discussion on Jewellery of Tamil Nadu’ shared how important Jewellery is for South Indians.

    There were various fun activities such as ‘The Girls Edition Stone Hurling Contest’, ‘Whispering Chain in South Indian Languages’, ‘Tug of War’, ‘Sugarcane Eating Challenge’, and others. The Kathak dance performance by the South Indian students was equally mesmerising, drawing the spectators to their feet in an attempt to emulate the artists. The day was filled with not only fun activities but also ended with an unforgettable food festival where they served various authentic South Indian dishes, including delectable sweet Pongal, tangy lemon rice, savoury tamarind rice, comforting coconut rice, and different flavours of Dosa, for which South Indians are known.

    Despite being a minority on the campus, the Northeast and South Indian students of Shoolini University demonstrated outstanding unity, hard work, and sacrifice in organising these events. Dean of Student Welfare Poonam Nanda aptly described Shoolini University as a “mosaic of diversity” that celebrated inclusivity and acceptance as a core part of its ethos. These cultural celebrations not only showcase the diverse drapes of India but also remind us of the beauty in unity amidst diversity.

  • Patented! Game-Changing Tech to Detect Drunk Drivers

    In an innovative stride toward enhancing road safety, Assistant Prof Brij Bhushan Sharma of Shoolini University has developed and patented a state-of-the-art system to detect drunk drivers. This groundbreaking technology, which utilises an Arduino Uno R3 microcontroller and an MQ-3 gas sensor module, is designed to detect alcohol levels near the driver and provide immediate alerts through LED indicators.

    Despite rigorous laws and periodic police checks, the menace of drunk driving continues to escalate, contributing to 41% of traffic-related fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Traditional methods of detection, which often involve manual checks or medical examinations, have proved insufficient in effectively curbing this dangerous behaviour.

    Assistant Prof Sharma’s drunk drivers detection system offers a proactive solution by automatically detecting alcohol concentrations of 1000ppm or higher around the driver. Once detected, the sensor’s output triggers the Arduino controller, which activates an LED light indication, signalling that the driver may be under the influence of alcohol.

    The inspiration for this device struck Assistant Prof Sharma during a routine drive, where he encountered a police checkpoint. Observing the inefficiencies of the manual checking process, he envisioned a built-in vehicle system that could streamline the detection process, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing roadblocks.

    “This system is designed not just to detect but also to alert surrounding road users, thereby acting as a deterrent to drunk driving,” stated Assistant Prof Sharma. With no existing products in the market, this invention could revolutionise how vehicle safety and driver sobriety are monitored, potentially saving countless lives and enhancing road safety standards globally.
